"Long before the first Pharaoh ascended Egypt's throne, an unknown and relatively advanced human society flourished in the deep desert west of the Nile. Until about 10.000 years ago, Gilf Kebir hosted a much wetter climate than today's hostile aridity." From Wael Abed's 'The Other Egypt--Travels in No-man's Land' p. 137, 1998.

"The dramatic environmental changes that dominated the eastern Sahara brought about two simultaneous phenomena. The weather grew increasingly drier, but this gradual dessication was followed cyclically by an atmospherewith sufficient water vapor to create precipitation over Gilf Kebir and the neighboring Uweinat region. The desert landscape in prehistory corresponds with today's grasslands of East Africa." From Wael Abed's 'The Other Egypt--Travels in No-man's Land', p. 138, 1998.
